10 ways to eliminate bad smells from the washing machine

To keep our house clean, it is not enough to clean all surfaces from dirt and dust. In a house, you often hear bad smells coming from appliances, such as the washing machine, or from the bathroom and kitchen drains. The solution to eliminating bad odors from the washing machine is among these 10 ways.

1. Make a short wash with vinegar

If the washing machine gives off bad smells for a short time, we can start a short wash. Before pressing the ” start ” button, we pour a little vinegar directly into the washing machine’s drum or into the detergent dispenser. It is a quick cleaning of the washing machine, in the absence of mold and incrustations.

2. Clean the washing machine components with baking soda

The baking soda, combined with the power of vinegar or lemon juice, becomes a powerful natural descaler and degreaser. We use this dense mixture to clean the individual components of the washing machine manually. Let’s start with the parts of the washing machine that require more attention.

3. Keep the detergent dispenser clean

The detergent dispenser is the place where incrustations are formed and unpleasant odors are released. For this reason, it is essential to keep the dispensers clean. The benefits of this type of maintenance are two: the absence of bad smells and economic saving.

We will prevent incrustations of detergents, especially in powder, from blocking parts of the washing machine. In these cases, all that remains is to call a technician and replace the washing machine components.

4. Start a vacuum wash at least once a month

To avoid the formation of unpleasant odors and prolong the washing machine’s life, we recommend carrying out a vacuum wash at least once a month. Those who use the washing machine more frequently can do this twice a month. Remember always to put vinegar in the washing machine to neutralize odors.

5. Use specific products for cleaning the washing machine

In the absence of good maintenance, over time, the formation of bad smells is inevitable. In these cases, natural remedies are not enough to combat bad smells. Specific products distributed on the market must be used. These have a high power to eliminate bad smells and restore the washing machine to factory conditions.

6. Carry out regular maintenance of the appliance

Maintenance of any appliance is of great importance. It becomes vital for appliances such as the washing machine, where we wash our clothes. If the washing machine releases bad odors, our clothes will also absorb them. For this reason, we periodically take care of cleaning the washing machine in its entirety, component by component.

7. Remove the deposits from the filter

The incrustations produce malfunctions of the washing machine and, above all, bad smells. Over time, detergent, and limescale, deposits may build-up in the filter. Then we take the filter apart and pass it under running water. If this is not enough, we leave the filter to soak in a solution of water and specific products.

8. Remove dirt residues from the door

To avoid mold and unpleasant odors, the washing machine door tends to be slightly open. But this is not enough. In addition to the air to dry any residual water, the cloth must be passed over the washing machine’s sealing gaskets. It is precisely there that the dirt that nestles in contact with water causes bad odors.

9. Use vinegar instead of fabric softener

Vinegar has a strong smell, which is why this way of removing bad smells can seem strange. Used during washing, it manages to counteract bad odors and soften garments. We recommend replacing the vinegar with the traditional fabric softener.

10. Sanitize the washing machine

The hygiene of the washing machine guarantees the absence of bad smells coming from it. One of the ways to eliminate bad odors is to sanitize the washing machine. We give priority to natural products, baking soda, vinegar, and water. If it does not work, we proceed with specific products for the maintenance of the washing machine.
