How to remove burns from copper pots

Copper pots are often used as decoration in some rustic style kitchens and as actual tableware in others. In the latter case, some precautions need to be taken during the cleaning process. Copper is an element that can be toxic if exposed to certain substances.

To avoid such exposure, the cookware is protected with a metal coating, usually steel or tin, which forms a barrier between the copper and the food. It is good to ensure that the cleaning methods do not damage the surface. Otherwise, the barrier will be damaged, and the pots will no longer be usable. That said, let’s find out how to remove burns from copper pots.

Needed: Sodium bicarbonate, Vinegar, Pure ammonia, Abrasive cloth, Pumice, Lemon.

To eliminate burns from copper pots, we have the possibility to choose between 2 different methods: the first consists of the use of abrasive substances, while in the second, liquids are used that can lighten the surfaces since they are acid-based.

In the first case, we can use the classic iron scouring pads or other pumice systems, which must be poured dry on the pot and rubbed with a sponge.

Another abrasive method is sodium bicarbonate and lemon, the latter known for its acidity capable of removing dirt and giving shine. Vinegar is undoubtedly one of the best natural antioxidants: applied to the pot and leave it on for a couple of hours, then, with a sponge, rub until the copper appears shiny and without burns.

If the pan is particularly burned, with very stubborn stains, it is possible to use an abrasive cloth wet with alcohol and possibly a fine grain, which performs the necessary action without consuming the copper.

There is the possibility of intervening even with liquid substances only, without using any abrasive product. In this case, the ideal solution is to put the copper pot in a container submerged in pure ammonia. After about twenty minutes, soaking, rub with a sponge on the affected areas, rinse the pot, and dry.

Absolutely, this is the only effective remedy to preserve a copper pot that has particular burns without necessarily using abrasive materials and chemicals.
